Extreme Tourism – What Is It?

in Extreme Sports

Extreme tourism is catching on as tourists become more and more adventurous when they go on vacation. Many adventurous people even take vacations to known areas at which extreme sports opportunities are present and at which the extreme lifestyle is known as a part of life.

Extreme tourism is really taking off as people take in all sorts of extreme sports on different continents and travel around looking for new chances to get that desired adrenaline rush.

Whether or not extreme tourism will catch on in the mainstream or not remains to be seen, but at the moment the scene of extreme tourism is filling seats on airplanes with people just ready to leap out on to icy peaks or raging white waters.

Whatever your personal vacation flavor is for the wilder side, extreme tourism has options for you and your adventurous spirit.

This type of tourism is also actually called "shock" tourism and it usually involves trips to jungles, mountain ranges, deserts, caves, and other places that may "shock" you as a tourist and really get your blood pumping. The tourist attractions at a shock tourist destination would include a lot of options for getting a rush or causing an element of risk.

As with any tourism option, there are varying degrees of professionalism that could cause problems not associated with the risk factor intended by the extreme tourist. You should always check out the validity of your destination and of your tour guide before you descend into the jungles or to a desert in the middle of nowhere for some "fun". Make sure their story checks out and that they are from a reputable company.

The mountainous terrain in Northern Pakistan is a popular sport for extreme tourism as many people go there from around the world to check out some of the ranges for rock climbing and to look at places to BASE jump.

Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, and other destinations in the former Soviet Union are also popular for the same things. Siberia is great for extreme tourists looking to freeze to death looking for adventure.

South America is another big destination for extreme tourists because of the varied terrain there. Peru, Chile, and Argentina are the top destinations for extreme tourism on that continent and they offer a plethora of options for the more adventurous travelers.

A niche closely related to extreme tourism is adventure vacations, where tourists can experience hostile areas or dangerous regions first-hand. Tourist companies will bring visitors right to a prime destination for experiencing situations that can be or are dangerous and people are certainly enjoying the option to get away from it all this way.

The whole point with this type of tourism isn’t to face fear or nearly give yourself a heart attack but more to plunge yourself into more adventurous sights and areas.
