Tennis Racquets

in Tennis

Tennis is a wonderful sport and knowing a little bit about the equipment it requires makes it even more rewarding. It would be great if most people who took up a sport would first read about it and the necessary gear before actually proceeding with buying what they think is needed and suitable for them. As far as tennis is concerned, the tennis racquets are the most important elements for the game. Today’s racquets come in various sizes, lengths, weights and materials. The longer the racquets the stronger the players should be. That is why it is highly advisable for parents to buy their kids racquets with a length of about 21 inches. The longest racquets are those of 25.5 inches but they are designed for very strong and tall players.

The weight is also important. Usually the weight is expressed without taking into account the string weight, and thus, the tennis racquets are weighed before they are strung. The regular weight varies between 8 and 12.5 ounces. Another element that defines tennis racquets is the head size. Should the head size be larger, then the racquet requires more power from the player. The advantage of having a small sized head is that it grants the player more precision in the hits. The smallest head size of tennis racquets produced today for the mass use is that of 90 square inches while the largest was 137 square inches and the model is no longer available on the market.

History has left quite a unique imprint on the aspect and build of the tennis racquets. Initially the heads were all about 65 square inches and were made of wood. Later another model appeared which had its wooden frame reeled with wire and carried the name of steel racquet. The wire was needed to make string loops and helped in the process of building the racquets. In the last quarter of the 20th century aluminum use in the construction of tennis racquets made it possible for heads to become larger, even over-sized. This aspect made possible the introduction of non-standard size tennis racquets.

Customizing has lately become a very important aspect in the manufacture of tennis racquets especially for professional players. For the masses, more and more advanced technologies are introduced so that the newer tennis racquets would satisfy and make tennis a better appreciated and enjoyable sport. Yet, the more advanced the technology, the higher the cost of producing these tennis racquets, and as a result, the more expensive the price.
